While the nation’s ag sector is committed to food safety, a new study shows there are still barriers for farmers to implement some of the best practices.
The ‘Needs Assessment Report’, by the National Farmers Union & Cornell University shows financial resources were the top concern, followed by time and farm infrastructure. Other concerns include the need for skilled labor, technical assistance, appropriate supplies & equipment, and knowledge & information.
More specifically, participants express the need for food safety audits, worker training, water testing, and record-keeping. NFU President Roger Johnson says the study will help the organization ensure farmers have access to resources so they can comply with regulations.
