Pork line speeds to slow after today

After today, pork line speeds will be slowed down at six major processors.

A University of Missouri livestock economist says that producers likely will not feel the impact this year. However, Scott Brown says, at some point, we will build inventory and by the time the industry is short of shackle space, it will be too late.

Other economists say that the judge’s ruling that reverts the line speeds back, will reduce competition and lead to increased market concentration.

The ruling applies to all facilities operating under the new Swine Inspection System. USDA has until the end of August to appeal.
