Rural Health Matters: May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Dr. Jeffrey Gold joins us on Rural Health Matters to discuss rural mental health awareness, the importance of reducing stigma in agriculture, and resources available to farmers, ranchers, and rural families seeking support.

OMAHA, NEBRASKA (RFD NEWS) — May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it remains an issue that continues to impact many farmers and ranchers, as Rural Health Matters highlights ongoing efforts and resources aimed at supporting mental health in agriculture.

Dr. Jeffrey Gold, President of the University of Nebraska, joined us on this week’s Rural Health Matters segment to discuss the latest in rural mental health awareness and available support systems.

In his conversation with RFD News, Dr. Gold addressed whether conversations around mental health are becoming more normalized in rural and farming communities, as well as the differences between urban and rural mental health challenges, noting the role isolation can play for producers in agricultural communities.

Dr. Gold also outlined resources available to individuals or families seeking support, including telehealth services as an accessible care option.

Finally, Dr. Gold shared his final thoughts on mental well-being for farmers and ranchers, encouraging viewers to take the first steps if they may be struggling, or to support others who are. He emphasized the importance of reaching out early if someone feels they or a loved one may need help.
