Secretary Vilsack: Carbon bank is opportunity of a lifetime to create new revenue for farms

The newest market on the horizon is a carbon market and farmers are tuned into what this means for their operation.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack says that it is the opportunity of a lifetime to create additional revenue sources for farmers.

Iowa farmers told him this week that they are interested in finding out more on how to participate, but the money has to come from somewhere.

“We have a lot of flexibility already at USDA, and we’re going to be utilizing that flexibility in a way that creates more new and better markets and I think farmers are going to find that to be a very-- they’re going to be very agreeable with that,” Vilsack explains.

He says that the programs will need congressional approval.
