Pork giant, Smithfield Foods will shut down 37 sow farms in the state this week in response to hog market conditions, according to KTVO-TV.
The local television station had been receiving viewer messages regarding the closings. An employee spoke out and told the station the company president announced this week that Smithfield is closing its sow farms in some northern counties, Putnam and Mercer.
Jim Monroe, Smithfield Foods Corporate Affairs Vice President said, “We are always taking steps to enhance our business for consistently strong performance through favorable and unfavorable market conditions.”
This is still a developing story.
