Cattle are not to blame for climate change, according to one expert

Cattle are not to blame for climate change, according to one California scientist.

Dr. Dr. Mitloehner, an air quality specialist with UC-Davis, says that if the cattle herd remains about the same size over a 10-year period, there is no net increase in methane because it is recycled.

“The biogenic carbon cycle with which our cattle produce methane, does not add additional new carbon to the atmosphere,” he said. “I believe that beef is on its way, in this country, to become climate neutral and not having any negative impact on climate.”

Dr. Mitloehner credits the cattle industry with reducing the carbon footprint.
