Scientists have found a breakthrough in treating bovine respiratory disease.
A USDA biologist says that they have found proteins in a bacteria closely associated with BRD which could be used in preventative measures to target only the pathogens and leave other bacteria alone.
BRD covers quite a few ailments in cattle. It can be caused by a variety of factors, from bacteria to genetics, and is complicated by treatments of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance. This new treatment could help the industry recover from some of its losses.
According to USDA’s Mike Clawson, “The beef cow industry loses up to an estimated $1 billion dollars a year due to bovine respiratory disease. That’s animal loss and treatment.”
The new rapid tests would help isolate infected cattle and prevent further outbreaks, in addition to the use of vaccines.
