MN Farmers Union sets recommendations for smaller processing industry

A bottleneck in the smaller meat processing industry is leaving Minnesota’s livestock producers with limited options.

The Minnesota Farmers Union says that closures and fully booked calendars are contributing to the backlogs. They also cite retaining employees and the cost of training new workers as big issues.

A report by the farmers union recommends one-year apprenticeships and a money pool for processors to use for worker relocation and retention bonuses.
