Strong Spuds: Idaho’s potato crop is looking good despite challenges

With harvest well underway, the Idaho Potato Commission says this year’s crop looks like a winning one.

Despite high input prices, farmers are optimistic about this season. Some operations could wrap harvest as early as this week, but official numbers could be months away.

The Commission says even though the weather has been all over the place, producers are hopeful when it comes to the quality of this year’s potatoes.

“The one message that I’m hearing loud and clear from everyone is quality looks very good on our crop this year. I do hear that yields are down in certain parts of the state; down a little bit and in other parts it’s more of a trend line average, but, like I said, the quality looks good and we’re still waiting to see what the final numbers on the yield are. Input costs are insane, but at the same time we feel like we’ve got a crop that should bring some good prices, and some good returns to our growers this year,” said Jamey Higham, the Idaho Potato Commission’s President.

He adds that as consumers look ahead to the holiday season, strong crop numbers will ensure shoppers enjoy a quality selection of spuds.
