Not So Sweet: The only sugar mill in Texas is closing its doors

Recently, Mexico failed to uphold its end of a water deal with south Texas, and the fallout is already impacting American agriculture — so far, resulting in the closure of Texas’ only sugar mill.

The economic impact of the lack of irrigation water for crops in the Lower Rio Grande Valley in 2024 is estimated to be a loss of nearly $496 million.
