One of the most dependable ag protection programs is turning 40 years old this year, and its entire staff is made up of agents with four paws and very strong noses.
The Beagle Brigade program began back in 1984, and they have been protecting ag ports of entry ever since. They help detect harmful plants, pests, and foreign animal diseases in cargo from other countries. Their training is extensive and takes weeks for the dogs and their handlers.
The dogs can detect diseases even if they are vacuum-sealed, and most dogs work for five years. Around 170 dogs are currently in the program with more being trained.
