The cattle industry is keeping a close eye on ongoing weather challenges and impact on feed

The cattle industry is keeping a close eye on the weather, for both carcass weight and feed availability purposes.

Recent precipitation has brought some much-needed relief for Pacific northwest producers, along with some unwelcome flooding but farmers are still in need of moisture.
A meat science assistant professor at the University of Idaho shares what he is looking out for when it comes to feed availability in these conditions.

“What that can also do is going to lend us to better understand the feed situation, and I’m going to keep a close eye on the commodities that are produced, corn and soy our main feed ingredients. Up here in Pacific northwest, we have a lot of great byproducts we can use, potato byproducts, wheat, barley, things like that, but corn and soybeans are still the biggest driving factors and great barometers for industry,” Dr. Phil Bass explains.

He says that despite the ongoing weather challenges. Producers should be proud of the increasing popularity in American beef as a lot of volatility remains in the marketplace.
