Thousands of dock workers walked off the job, jeopardizing U.S supply chain

Tens of thousands of dock workers are on strike. After months of negotiations, unions and port workers could not reach a deal, leaving supply chains on shaky ground.

Members of the International Longshoremen’s Association walked off the job shortly after midnight. The group says this would be the first strike of its kind in nearly 50 years, and they say they are prepared to fight for as long as it takes. It is a situation officials have been trying to prevent for weeks.

The East and Gulf ports are major ag container shipping hubs, and the strike happens just as harvest gets into full swing. Meat industry leaders also warn the strike could lead to shortages and price increases for U.S. consumers.
