Farmers, ranchers, and ag groups across the U.S. are anxious to get a five-year Farm Bill on the books.
The National Farmers Union says the industry has been waiting for some time now and time is running out.
“We’ve been looking for over the summer and into the fall now. More public activity, be it a markup on the same side or House floor action, to move forward with their version of the bill. None of that has happened, yet, though, however, we have heard from the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees that they intend to move forward with the bill this year,” said NFU’s Mike Stranz.
The Farm Bill is not the only item lawmakers have to tackle when they return to the Hill. Congress still has to pass spending bills before the year is up. Lawmakers, like Senator Chuck Grassley, are hopeful a five-year bill can get on the books this year, but many believe another extension will be likely.
