U.S. Customs and Border Protection Ag Specialists work to ensure your Valentine’s Day flowers are pest-free

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agriculture Specialists in El Paso are shaking and tapping cut flowers this week to ensure the flowers we get on Valentine’s Day do not contain any kind of pests or diseases in them.

CBP Director of Field Operations in El Paso says just like the specialists are working, you can contribute as well.

“This is always one of the busiest weeks of the year for CBP agriculture specialists. Typically we note an increase in the number of floral imports arriving at area ports of entry including those being transported by individuals. The public can help by declaring all agricultural products they are importing.”

While the number of harmful pests found in floral arrangements is low, one pest could cause millions of dollars of damage to our nation’s crops.

They suggest checking out their website before importing floral arrangements so they can know which flowers are prohibited.
