U.S. Senator Jerry Moran on Trade, Farmer Aid Package

While recent trade frameworks are welcome news for the ag sector, the tariff process has added financial stress for farmers. Many are now waiting for details on a potential aid package, which the administration says could arrive as early as next week. U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, of Kansas, joined us to share his outlook on these moves and more.

Senator Moran acknowledged the importance of China in the overall global export market for U.S. ag produce. He also stressed that holding China accountable when it comes to actually following up on any agreements which are signed will be critical.

In addition, he expressed optimism that, with the shutdown behind us, CRP and other USDA-managed payments due to farmers can begin flowing again within the coming days and weeks. But he also acknowledged the extraordinary challenges that farmers are facing at the present time, and expressed the conviction that much rides on the implementation of even further aid, as has been proposed.

Senator Moran wrapped up the interview by expressing holiday-appropriate thanks for the “hard-working people who care about themselves, their families, their communities, who make this country work, and provide the food, fiber and energy,” not only for the United States but for the world.
