Ukraine’s defense ministry reported Monday that Russia had attacked ports along the Danube River.

Capacity at those ports had been expanded in recent months, leading up to the expiration of the Black Sea Grain Deal. Analysts saw them as a key alternative route for the nation’s grain exports with the larger ports such as Odesa now blocked.

Grain prices jump on reports of the news. Wheat prices gained 3.8 percent to $7.25 a bushel. Corn added 2.1 percent to $5.48 a bushel.

Russia has repeatedly hit Ukraine’s ports since pulling out of the deal last week. Today’s reported attacks are the first targets of Ukrainian ports on the Danube River.
