USTR Tai pushing for GMO acceptance and potato trade with Mexico

U.S. Trade Rep. Katherine Tai has been in Mexico pushing for progress under USMCA. She told Mexican officials they need to resume the approval process for GMOs and urged them to increase access for U.S. potatoes.

Mexico recently announced it will ban GMO corn for human consumption. Whether it will be used for animal feed remains to be seen.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says that the Ambassador should make this issue a priority.

“We’re going to be fighting for respect for our intellectual property rights, in particular pharmaceuticals, and we’re going to try to get ethanol into Mexico without restrictions that have been recently imposed,” Grassley states.

He says that he will meet with Ambassador Tai next week and hopes to have an update on this and the status of a trade agreement with the UK.
