“We’ve Only Hit the Tip of the Iceberg": USMEF is prioritizing demand growth on the global market

The meat industry is always looking for new markets, and that is a major goal of the U.S. Meat Export Federation. While prices remain high, concerns still hover around rebuilding the herd.

Federation President Dan Halstrom says the potential for growth is always there, but that growth will not happen overnight. He tells Brownfield Ag News that they are taking the efforts region by region and are looking to see total value grow over time.

“Look at Southeast Asia, places like Indonesia, places like Africa...where we only have hit the very tip of the iceberg.”

Halstrom says most customers understand the higher prices but he is often asked when the U.S. herd will finally be rebuilt.

U.S. beef exports were down 5 percent from a year ago in June, but that is still the second largest amount since this year began.
