State lawmakers in Wisconsin passed a bill prohibiting plant-based proteins from using the word “meat” on packages.
The legislation is now on its way to the Wisconsin Senate.
Two other bills would ban plant-based products from using dairy terms like “milk,” “cream,” “yogurt,” and “cheese.”
Other states are trying to pass similar legislation. Proponents argue plant-based foods should not be able to use animal ag terms to sell their products.
