A More Resilient Food System: Secretary Vilsack shares the efforts to make the change

During the pandemic, it rang true that the U.S. food system, while efficient, it was not as resilient as it needs to be.

Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, says change is coming to fix that. He says the country is building muscle and making connections to rebuild the local and regional system, which over time will allow producers different avenues to sell.

“I think that transformation that’s taking place for our food system is going to benefit farmers. It’s also going to benefit consumers because it’s going to give consumers lots of choices. It’s going to give consumers the ability to know when they spend their consumer dollars that they are maybe helping the local economy or they’re helping the environment. I think that’s going to give consumers a good feeling about all of this and it’s going to better connect I think those of us who consume with those who produce,” said Sec. Vilsack.

The Secretary has released a $2 billion plan to transform the food system, which has been met with mixed reviews.
