ATHENS, Ga. (RFD News) — A new campaign is raising awareness around mental health in the agricultural community during National Suicide Prevention Month.
Noah Hopkins with the AgriSafe Network joined us on Wednesday’s Market Day Report to discuss mental health challenges facing farmers.
In his conversation with RFD News, Hopkins said factors outside farmers’ control, including weather and input costs, tend to take a toll on their mental health. He also found farmers were much more willing to talk about their own struggles despite stereotypes.
However, Hopkins encouraged community members to regularly check in with farmers and give them an outlet to talk.
For those looking to offer more support, AgriSafe also provides training on how to handle more serious mental health conversations.
