BURLINGTON, Iowa (RFD-TV) — For nearly 180 years, one Iowa farm has remained in the same family, and today the sixth generation is finding new ways to preserve that legacy through agriculture, agritourism, and community events.
Doug and Heather Beckman of Beckman Heritage Farms joined us on Market Day Report Weekend to share how their family farm has evolved while continuing to create a place where agriculture, family, and community come together.
In their conversation with RFD-TV, Doug said the farm’s history dates back to 1848, when his family ancestor purchased the property after it went through a sheriff’s sale. He said the story is especially meaningful because it was uncommon at the time for a woman to own land and manage a farming operation.
Today, the Beckmans raise corn, soybeans, and pumpkins while also welcoming visitors through agritourism efforts, including weddings, community events, and their annual Fall Market. Heather Beckman said the idea began with planting pumpkins for their own family and grew into a larger event after inviting other local vendors to participate.
The family’s approach to farming has also been shaped by raising three children, including two children with autism. Doug said farming has taught their family patience and the importance of adapting to challenges, while allowing each child to grow and learn at their own pace.
Heather said the experience has helped them become more understanding and patient as parents. She said the farm has provided a place for their children to experience growth in their own way.
Those experiences helped inspire the family’s recent Freedom Lights Celebration, a drone light show designed as a sensory-friendly alternative to traditional fireworks. Doug said the idea came after learning about drone shows and recognizing that the quieter format could create an event their own family could enjoy.
The event drew nearly 3,000 people to the farm, exceeding the family’s expectations. Heather said the gathering felt like a large community celebration, bringing together families, neighbors, and visitors who could enjoy the event in a welcoming environment.
The Beckmans said their goal is to continue finding ways to keep the farm thriving while preserving its history and creating opportunities for future generations.
