Bill Alexander Painting Tips: Eagle Lake

The great painter Bill Alexander is going to teach you how to make a breathtaking work of art!

The Dark Foreground Makes the Sky Even Brighter!

Bill continues with Evening at Eagle Lake. Today he adds a dark foreground.

Points To Consider:

  • Bill is painting into wet paint.

  • The main focus of this painting was to show how to make a brilliant sky.

  • Bill loads his 2.5" Blending Brush with a LOT of dark paint. He does this because then the brush can be shaped into a “dog paw.”

  • Once, Bill, has his brush loaded he can touch the canvas as if he was rubber-stamping something. The tree is formed in his brush already.

  • Bill is so right when he was the power is in his equipment. No matter how good of an artist you are if you don’t have the proper tools, you may struggle.

  • Since Bill is painting an evening scene he doesn’t need to add highlights to his trees.

  • Bill uses the Palette Knife to remove paint to create the illusion of tree trunks. As he plows through the paint he removes it and causes the background color to show through.

  • He grabs all of his light colors with his palette knife to lay in the road. Notice how he creates perspective?

  • He then uses the knife to add more foliage by cutting in through the dark foreground foliage. He pulls some of the dark paint into the light background.

  • He adds red paint where the sun would be hitting the top of the trees to create a glow.

Anyone can learn to paint. All you need is the courage to try and a great teacher like Bill Alexander. You too can paint, we promise!
