Despite increasing tension over Hong Kong, China still plans to honor the Phase One trade agreement with the U.S.
Earlier in the week, President Trump signed the Hong Kong Autonomy Act, which removed Hong Kong’s preferential treatment. According to the South China Morning Post, Beijing summoned U.S. Ambassador Terry Brandstad to tell him to voice opposition on Wednesday.
Reports have also indicated China has warned the U.S. it will respond to “bullying” and have extended an invitation to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to come to China to see there are no human rights violations.
On Tuesday, China made its largest purchase of U.S. corn in its history.
