It’s a new season, which means new seasonal foods popping up in the farm stands and grocery stores around the country. Celebrate the fall flavors with some produce at their peak this time of year.
Apples:
Did you know there are 100 commercial varieties grown in the US; and many more that grow in the wild! Apples are great dipped in caramel or eaten by hand as is but have you ever used them as part of your chicken stuffing? Give Paula Deen’s Skillet Roasted Apple Stuffed Chicken with Carrots a try for your next Sunday dinner.
Beets:
Beets are an awesome source of essential vitamins and minerals as well as being a naturally sweet vegetable. They can even be used as a source of granulated sugar. California Bountiful highlights a farm that has been processing sugar beets for generations.
Mushrooms:
Often found in fall dishes, mushrooms are known as the “meat” of the vegetable world due to their savory umami flavor. Although once commonly foraged, the mushrooms we eat are now commercially grown in controlled environments. FarmHer visited the Bunoa Foods mushroom farm to see how they end up on your plate.
Pineapples:
Did you know Hawaii provides a third of all pineapples in the world? This super versatile fruit can be used in both Upside Down Cake and to tenderize meat. Try them on the grill with Eat Fresh’s Pineapple with Sweet Mole dessert.
Pumpkin:
Nothing says “Fall” like Pumpkin. From lattes and candy to cleaning supplies and stickers, pumpkin is the symbol for the season. The pumpkins have to be pretty big to be making all that flavored stuff. The Virginia Farm Bureau shows us how to grow our very own Great Pumpkins.
Raspberries:
Raspberries also come into season in the early fall. These juicy berries are delicious in smoothies, dried, or baked in a pie, while the leaves can be made into tea. Washington Grown has some ideas on how you can keep the delicate berry around longer than the leaves stay on the trees. Try out their freezer jam recipe.
