WASHINGTON, D.C. (Market Day Report Weekend) — As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the American Farm Bureau Federation is launching a new initiative highlighting agriculture’s role in the nation’s past, present, and future.
Mike Tomko, communications director for the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), joined us for Market Day Report Weekend to discuss the organization’s new FARM 250 campaign, which uses the acronym FARM to spotlight four pillars of American agriculture: Feeding Families, Advancing Innovation, Rural Resilience, and Mindful Stewardship.
In his conversation with RFD News anchor Eliza Petry, Tomko said “Feeding Families” serves as the foundation of the initiative because providing a safe, abundant food supply has been at the heart of American agriculture since the nation’s founding. He said the campaign recognizes the generations of farm families who have helped feed communities while supporting the country’s growth.
He explained that “Advancing Innovation” reflects agriculture’s continued evolution, noting that today’s farmers are using precision technology, data, and new production practices to grow more food while using resources more efficiently. Tomko said honoring agriculture’s history also means recognizing the innovation that will shape its future.
Tomko said “Rural Resilience” highlights the strength and perseverance of rural communities, which continue to overcome challenges ranging from weather disasters and economic pressures to changing markets while remaining essential to the nation’s food system.
He added that “Mindful Stewardship” recognizes farmers’ long-term commitment to caring for the land, water, and natural resources. Tomko said protecting those resources is critical to ensuring agriculture remains productive for generations to come.
According to Tomko, the FARM 250 initiative aligns naturally with America’s 250th anniversary because agriculture has been woven into the country’s story since its earliest days. He said the campaign aims to help consumers better understand the people behind their food and the important role farming continues to play in the nation’s economy and communities.
While the initiative coincides with the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration, Tomko said FARM 250 will continue beyond Independence Day. He encouraged Americans to participate in the campaign’s ongoing photo contest, which invites farmers, ranchers, and consumers to share images that capture the people, places, and traditions of American agriculture while celebrating its enduring legacy.
