RALEIGH, N.C. (RFD News) — Farmers are preparing grain bins for the fall harvest, and new USDA research shows treating hard-to-reach areas ahead of storage could help control insect populations.
John Mays with Central Life Sciences joined us on Thursday’s Market Day Report to discuss steps growers can take before storing grain.
In his conversation with RFD News, Mays said growers should clean their bins thoroughly and pay close attention to cracks and crevices, where small amounts of grain dust and debris can allow insects to survive between storage seasons.
Mays said USDA research showed products with multiple active ingredients provided effective insect control. He pointed to red flour beetles as one example, saying the population was completely controlled after seven days.
Questions remain about potential crop damage as the industry works to control the pest.
