Producers are using artificial insemination to not only improve the genetics of the herd but also the quality of the beef. AI is nothing new, but the interest in the technology is growing due to its benefits.
John Hall from the University of Idaho states, “The two biggest ways they can capitalize on AI is by using fixed time AI...So there are more calves born early in the calving season, which results in heavier weaning weights...The other things they also can do is they are going to get some genetic advantage by using genetically superior bulls.” This can result in financial benefits for ranchers: better pricing on the cattle and lower costs, as opposed to buying breeding bull.
The benefits also stretch down the supply chain and not just at the farm. Hall states, “The American consumer is really focused on quality.”
