After Hurricane Ian devastated ag operations back in the Fall, we are now getting a better look at its impact on Florida’s orange crop.
Mark Hudson with the National Ag Statistics Service breaks it down.
“We’re gonna start with the nonvalencias. Our forecast for December is 7 million boxes, that’s down 36 percent from our October forecast of 11 million boxes. When you compare that to the previous year of the 7 million boxes, it’s 62 percent down from last season and 69 percent from 2 years ago. For our valencias, our October forecast was 17 million. Our December forecast is 13 million, also down 4 million boxes, which is a reduction of 24 percent from our October forecast, it’s down 43 percent from the previous year.”
Total orange crop projection is 20 million boxes, the smallest since the 1937-1939 season.
