So far this year, 8 million turkeys have been lost to High Pathogenic Avian Influenza.
Those are part of the record-setting 50 million+ birds killed because of the outbreak. It is the deadliest, after passing the previous record set in 2015.
The National Turkey Federation says Avian Flu is their top concern heading into next year, and are calling on the federal government to fund research that could help keep the virus in check.
Despite this year’s losses, the group does not anticipate any shortages for the rest of the holiday season.
