Hurricane Iota caused major damage in Nicaragua

Hurricane Iota slams into the coast of Central America bringing catastrophic winds and floods to an already battered region.

The Category 5 storm made landfall in Nicaragua, just miles from where Hurricane Eta, a Category 4, hit just last week.

160 mph winds knocked over trees and leveled some buildings. Heavy rainfall is causing flooding, on top of the standing water that was left over from Eta. The storm is expected to weaken and dissipate by tomorrow.

Right now, Nicaragua is in the middle of rice and coffee harvest. Shipping and production interruptions are expected. The region is a major export of these crops to the U.S.
