MANHATTAN, Kan. (RFD News) — The Livestock Conservancy is conducting its first comprehensive census of rare rabbit breeds in the U.S. to get a clearer picture of their populations.
Jeremy Cowan with The Livestock Conservancy joined us on Monday’s Market Day Report to discuss the effort.
In his conversation with RFD News, Cowan said existing population data largely comes from rabbit shows and registrations, which can leave out breeders who do not participate. The census will provide a broader look at rare rabbit populations across the country.
The effort covers 15 breeds currently on the organization’s Conservation Priority List, with results expected to help determine their status and guide future conservation efforts.
