Not All Is Lost: Florida’s tomato crop manages to be spared from Hurricane Ian

Florida’s tomato crop is expected to rebound.

Hurricane Ian’s wrath did a number on Florida crops, but the Florida Tomato Exchange says not all hope is lost.

The category four storm did not impact tomato crops in the northern part of the state, but the Exchange warns as harvest moves through central Florida, supplies will be lighter than normal.

However, recent weather has been ideal, so producers have been able to recoup some portions of fields that were damaged. Planting for south Florida’s winter tomato crop has continued as normal with no impact form the storm.

The Commission expects production to increase through December.
