On To The Next: What will happen if our top buyer doesn’t purchase our GMO corn?

American corn growers wonder if they should be looking for other markets in light of Mexico’s ban on GM corn.

Mexico is the top U.S. buyer and is expected to import 18 million metric tons this year, but the industry wonders what that number will be if they do not take any genetically modified corn.

Senator Chuck Grassley explains what he thinks the future will hold if Mexico does not bend: “If USTR doesn’t win this case, it’s just a natural thing that we got to do and there’s probably some opening in that direction. Because if Mexico imports corn from some other country, that is not GMO, then we’ll sell our GMOs to a country that will take GMO because you know we got a worldwide supply of grain and where it bulges out one place or shrinks in another place, you just fill those spots in.”

Sen. Grassley says that a perfect example of this is Russia.

The U.S. is not buying oil and natural gas from them, so Russia is selling to more places that may have imported from the U.S.
