A Pennsylvania beef packer has stopped production, increasing worries about local supplies for food retailers. It’s the latest issue for Nicholas Meats, in a string of environmental problems.
The state of Pennsylvania cited the slaughterhouse for applying food processing residual on snow-covered fields, which is banned.
Nicholas Meats calls the ruling arbitrary because it has done this for years. It says it has no choice but to shutdown, leaving 350 employees without work.
The state says that the company has expanded greatly in recent years, but its storage plan for the waste generated has failed to keep up.
