NASHVILLE, Tenn (RFD-TV) RODEO HOUSTON is a tournament style rodeo where athletes compete in their Super Series to advance to the Semi Finals, and then on to the Finals where each champion will earn a $50,000 check.
Super Series IV started last night, and in the bareback riding it was California rider Clayton Biglow who won Round 1 with 89 points on a Calgary Stampede horse. Clayton went to his first WNFR this past year.
Behind Biglow was Ty Breuer, Steven Peebles, and Jessy Davis.
Three-time WNFR qualifier Chuck Schmidt won the saddle bronc riding after having earned 86 points on Calgary Stampede’s “Weekend Departure.” The South Dakota rancher collected $3,000 for the Round 1 win.
There were two 91 point rides in the bull riding in Round 1, which matches the highest marked bull ride of the rodeo.
Bayle Worden rode “Go Texan” and Trey Benton covered “Say When” from Bailey Pro Rodeo. They both won $2,500 each.
Hunter Herrin started his year off right by winning San Antonio, which moved him from 157th to 5th in the World Standings. He hasn’t let up since.
Herrin won the tie-down roping in RODEO HOUTON’s Super Series IV Round 1 on “Dundee” after throwing his hands up in 10. 4 seconds.
Winning the team roping was header Kolten Schmidt from Canada and 2-time WNFR qualifier Shay Carroll. They connected for a beautiful 5.2 second run to win $6,000.
In the steer wrestling, it was Mississippi man Tyler Pearson with a time of 4.7 to take the win. Behind him was Todd Suhn, then current world champ Tyler Waguespack. Rounding out the fourth place spot was Jake Rinehart.
In the barrel racing, futurity horse trainer Kassie Mowry ran a 14.30 to edge Sherry Cervi by four one-hundredths of a second. Amy Wilson caught up with Kassie on Western Sports Weekly to talk about the horse she was riding, “Fire Walker Makes Me Happy,” which is the same horse that helped her win San Angelo earlier this year.
As Rodeo Austin continues, a few new round leaders emerged last night. In the team roping, a Texas team took over the lead.
With Rowdy Rieken on the heading side and Ace Pearce on the heeling side, the team connected for a fast time of 3.8 seconds.
About a month ago, Cody Demoss won $333,000 at RFD-TV’s THE AMERICAN, and last night he went to the lead in the saddle bronc riding at Rodeo Austin with an 86.5 point ride on JK Rodeo’s “Dakota Babe.”
In the barrel racing Brittany Kelly went to the lead in the round after making a run of 15.41 seconds on a horse she calls “Doodle.” Brittany is from Pasa Robles, California, and is married to 7-time WNFR team roping qualifier, Dugan Kelly.
