The meat processing industry is ready to push back against EPA wastewater guidelines. There will be two public hearings held later this month so the industry can respond to their standards for meat processing discharge into public waterways.
Should that waste from meat plants be allowed as fertilizer? The question has sparked a heated debate in the state of Missouri.
As of now, three cases are pending in Missouri state courts against Denali Water Solutions, which is the company with the biggest stake in the argument. Residents near the plant say where the sludge is held for spraying are cesspools of rotting meat and complain about the odor and pieces of flesh, beaks, and feathers in the lagoon.
A Representative from Denali says they are repurposing material from meat packers, and there is not a water contamination problem.
