Soaring Poultry: Production managed despite HPAI outbreaks

Despite ongoing detections of High Pathogenic Avian Influenza, U.S. poultry production is climbing up.

The USDA reports more than 4 billion pounds of poultry were certified as wholesome last month, which is up 3 percent compared to 2021. That was due in part to chicken production increasing by 4 percent from a higher processing pace and heaver live weights. Those numbers canceled out a 3 percent decline in turkey production, which came in at 414 million pounds due to a slower slaughter rate and lower live weights.

The next set of annual poultry production projections will be out on February 8th.
