Spike in COVID cases may hurt biofuel’s recovery

There is fear this recent spike in COVID cases will hinder a full recovery for the biofuels sector.

Travel is usually down in the winter, but AAA expected travel to be down four percent this holiday weekend because of restrictions and fears over spreading the virus.

Renewable Fuels Association President Geoff cooper says that the latest data shows a big drop in gasoline consumption and this translates into a drop in ethanol blending as well.

He adds that a return to a more normal way of living will be good for both fuel consumption and ethanol demand.

The virus is spreading in rural and metropolitan America, according to CDC data.

West Texas and New Mexico have increased rates with additional counties showing more than 500 new cases per 100,000 people. Even the “green areas” in New England and the southeast have turned into “red zones.”

Rural infections grew by 10 percent from the previous week with the 9th straight week of record breaking case numbers.
