California scientists just wrapped up a study on what should happen if they installed solar panels over the state’s waterways.
The group says that covering canals like the California Aqueduct would not only generate thirteen-gigawatts of energy each year, it would also prevent 63-billion gallons of water from evaporating.
Plus, the panels could be cooled by the water, making them more efficient.
Electricity from the panels could then power the pumps to irrigate farmland, replacing the diesel generators many farmers use today.
