The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is in its final week, and over the weekend, a local teen set a new record at the School Art Auction.
Mia Huckman a student at Lamar CISD sold her Grand Champion painting “Our Last Roundup” for $275,000. This painting is a detailed depiction of an older cowboy riding horseback while working cattle.
Mia tells Rodeo Houston this accomplishment is a dream come true.
“Ever since elementary, I’ve wanted to win here,” she said. “Winning in my last year means so much.”
The piece was bought by J Alan Kent Development, which included Shelly Mulanax who says she donates to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo show to continue her mother’s legacy.
“My mother loved school art,” Mulanax said. “She would be so proud.”
The Reserve Grand Champion Work of Art was a painting named “Morning Dove” and was created by 17-year-old Eliza Hoffman, which sold for $185,000.
