The U.S. hog supply could see declines for the beginning of this year

Pork experts say the number of U.S. hogs coming to market the first half of 2023 will be lower compared to a year ago.

Researchers at the Steiner Consulting Group say the number of market hogs was down more than a million head at the start of December. They say the numbers are similar to what we saw in hog slaughter rates in October and November, and if accurate, could signal a downward turn in the hog supply for the next few quarters.

When November wrapped up, ham inventories were nearly 40 percent below the five-year average.
