A Colorado third grader took home the grand prize as the state’s Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program contest winner for her prize vegetable.

Valeria Roman was one of more than one million entrants across the country. For her prize, she won a $1,000 savings bond toward her future education.

“Over the course of the past 15 years, the Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program has proved to be an exciting, successful and worth-while experience that children, teachers, parents and grandparents across the country have embraced,” said Bonnie Plants CEO Stan Cope.

The contest is for third graders all around the country to spark children’s interest in agriculture and the basics of gardening. Each student is given a small seedling that, with proper nurturing, has the potential to grow to be more than 40 pounds.
