Turkey producers warn of potential shortage for fresh small birds

Turkey producers are feeling the impact of higher corn costs and that could impact your Thanksgiving feast.

Producers are warning of a potential shortage of fresh birds under 16 pounds.

Frozen supplies may still be available but it can take a week to thaw large birds. In addition to rising feed costs, hatcheries cite decreased demand for turkey. Also, to get a fresh turkey at Thanksgiving, the eggs have to hatch at just the right time.

Processors have also struggled to keep up with the pace due to lack of available workers.
