A new rule is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register restricting sugar, sodium, and non-whole grains in school meals.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says this will help strengthen school meals. USDA says they will take a “gradual, multiyear approach.” The standards will include:

  • Limiting added sugars in certain high-sugar products
  • Allowing flavored milk in certain circumstances
  • Reducing weekly sodium limits
  • Emphasizing products that are whole grain

Ranking member of the Senate Ag Committee, John Boozman says he is currently reviewing the rules.
