A new rule is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register restricting sugar, sodium, and non-whole grains in school meals.
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says this will help strengthen school meals. USDA says they will take a “gradual, multiyear approach.” The standards will include:
- Limiting added sugars in certain high-sugar products
- Allowing flavored milk in certain circumstances
- Reducing weekly sodium limits
- Emphasizing products that are whole grain
Ranking member of the Senate Ag Committee, John Boozman says he is currently reviewing the rules.
