The USDA says it has the tools to assure the nation’s sugar supply this year.
Speaking at the International Sweetener Colloquium, the USDA’s Barb Fesco said weather woes in the U.S. and drought in Mexico are part of the problem.
However, she is relatively optimistic that they can manage those supplies, should the nation fall short.
Fesco says the difference will have to be made up by refining cane from other countries and refiners need to produce more.
However, the National Confectioners Association’s Dan Shorts doubts the solid supply, saying the current environment is dealing with uncertainty and also difficult pricing.
