Avocados from Mexico, the U.S. could soon be short of the staple. That is if an effort is successful in getting shipments of the fruit grown on illegal orchards banned.
The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico says that there should be consequences for exports sent from deforested land to the U.S., and right now, there are 817 illegal orchards identified by the Mexican government’s Forest Guardian Initiative.
As the world’s top exporter, Mexico supplies four out of five avocados eaten in the United States.
