Did you guess courting candle?
So, you long for the old days? How about having dates timed by a candle?
In the late-1800s when a suitor came calling, the father took a quick look and decided how long he could stay. Handsome, upstanding, wealthy? Raise the candle. Homely, dishonest, poor? Lower the candle. When the flame burned down to the metal holder, the date was over and the suitor had to leave.
