Did you guess a wooden sock darner ball? It is very helpful for repairing socks or gloves!
Slide the large end of the “ball” end into the sock to support the area needing repair. Select a thread close to the sock’s thread weight and color, and weave it in to repair the weak spot.
Until the turn of the last century, handled sock darners were often painted with amusing domestic motifs.
